Grand Haven Lighthouse

I was about to leave…

My face was numb and so were my fingers. I wasn’t ready for the cold and the wind. It was too early in the season. I was on the beach photographing The Grand Haven Lighthouse for just over an hour when I decided it was time to pack it in and continue further up North. I was at Grand Haven the night before and as soon as I pulled in it started to pour. I would choose to return the next morning. It was a little detour in the trip but well worth it and we kind of didn’t really have a hard plan anyway.

As I got to my truck I saw 4 guys getting ready to head out on the water. As much as I didn’t want to freeze some more I had to follow them out and grab some shots. I thought they were pretty crazy but so did the people the day before when they saw me at the end of another pier with 10ft waves crashing over the pier.

It was a pretty cool experience to watch these friends shred the 10 ft waves on Lake Michigan at The Grand Haven Lighthouse,

We have some workshops in the works so if you’d like to stay up to date on all classes local, or nationwide, be sure to sign up for our newsletter.

As for the Cherry Blossom Trees at Brookside Reservation in Cleveland Ohio, they still have some beauty but are on their way out for sure. They look really pretty today with their white and pink petals mixed in with the green leaves sprouting.

Hope you all got some great content down here this year!

We’ve gone Green

Well, the trees are turning green. It was only a matter of time. With that being said they are still gorgeous on this Sunday morning. It’s astounding how many petals stayed on the trees. Many years past the petals fall to the ground or get ugly and wilt right on the trees by the time the green sets in.

They’ve put on quite a show this year!

Surprise…🌸🌸🌸

Saturday April 23rd, 2022. Brookside Reservation Cherry Blossom Trees still look amazing!

If you’re a photographer or just looking to get out on this beautiful April weekend in Cleveland, I would suggest taking a quick trip. Who knows how long we have left.

The groud was slightly moist but not saturated. Keep in mind I did not walk the whole grounds, yall don’t pay me enough for that!

There are still tons of flowers on the trees , not many petals on the ground and I didn’t notice any of the trees going green yet.

Happy snapping and please be respectful of others doing the same or just enjoying the experience here.

Monday morning will be the last daily update as we will not be in the area to check on them.

Not a Soul in sight

8:34 am on Friday morning, the Sun is shining, birds are chirping, slight breeze and nobody in sight for the 30 minutes I was there!

The Cherry Blossom Trees at Brookside Reservation in Cleveland Ohio are Thriving like your essential Oil dealer, and they smell just as good too.

The trees are absolutely gorgeous and I am in shock they look this good after all the crazy weather we’ve had the past 10 days. The petals are starting to fall and with a good breeze it’s like a mini snow storm. The ground is not too bad and I’m sure will really dry out with this forecasted heatwave for the weekend

It’s been such a joy to have this place all to myself this morning but I know that will not be the case this weekend.

Happy snapping and please be respectful of others doing the same or just enjoying the experience here.

Monday morning will be the last daily update as we will not be in the area to check on them.

Dear Life…

These Cherry Blossom Trees at Brookside Reservation in Cleveland Ohio sure are holding on for dear life. Just when we thought they were done with giving us life they pop back up. Through the rain, wind, snow and freezing Temps they sure are still pretty. We do have some petals starting to fall off and hit the ground which means they will just be green Trees before we know it. After this morning we will see nothing but beautiful weather throughout the weekend. I mean they’re forecasting low 80's now for Saturday and Sunday.

Time to break out the shorts and sundresses and head on down and check them out.

Is this the end as we know it..

Have the Cherry Blossom Trees at Brookside Reservation in Cleveland Ohio seen their demise? Two days of wind, rain, sleet, snow, and gray skies after two days of Sunny skies and peak Bloom.

Unfortunately the heavy snow we got today had some of the branches nearly touching the ground.

Brookside Cherry Blossom Update Friday .04.15.22

Hello!

If you’re new here, Welcome! If you’re not new, welcome back! Every year hundreds of photographers around Northeast Ohio eagerly await the blooming of the Cherry Blossom Trees at Brookside Reservation, A Cleveland Metropark in well, Cleveland, Ohio.

I believe it was 4 years ago that I got tired of Photographers bombarding our facebook groups with the same question, “Does anyone know what the Cherry Blossom Trees look like?” I live close enough that I decided to go down daily and update everyone with photos of their progress.

Bloom happens at different times each year, weather plays a major role in that process. Last year we were at full bloom before we even saw any buds this year. We have a few different variety of Japanese Cherry Blossom trees and they bloom a little bit apart from each other. The trees at Brookside Reservation are of the later blooming trees.

As of Friday April 15th, 12pm 2022 the Trees at Brookside are at Full Bloom. Full Bloom according to sources are when 70% of the buds are flowered. That is definitely the case here. The weather plays a big role as to what happens next. Generally you have 3-4 days of beautiful trees after the day of peak bloom. It could be as much as a week after or short as 2 days. We have some rain and wind coming up that could make this years season pretty short.

I am not an Arborist, A meteorologist or a Cherry Blossom Tree expert. I’m just a local Photographer and Leather Crafter who has been tracking the trees for a few years now and reading up on their behavior. It is up to you to use what you know and your best judgment as when to visit them yourselves or when to schedule your photo sessions.

I’m sure it will get quite crowded this weekend being easter weekend but please be respectful of other photographers and people just wanting to go and enjoy them. Remember, it’s free to go there and you’re not the only person in the park. You’re not entitled to anything while there, even if you are charging your clients for Professional photos. Have fun and enjoy yourselves!

Brookside Reservation Cherry Blossom Bloom 4.13.22

Early morning Check-in as I have a leather Vendor show this evening to set up for.

The trees really popped since I checked on them last night at 6pm. While I am no arborist I would say peak bloom will start in a few days. Friday-Sunday would be when I set up my shoots. Now there are some factors that could ruin that like wind and rain but I’m going to stick with this weekend being prime

Brookside Reservation Cherry Blossom Bloom 🌸. 4.12.22

The nicer weather has a few flowers popping up. Not many, but they are starting. With the nicer Weather today, Wednesday, I would bet they will be looking pretty beautiful for Easter Weekend.

Wade Oval Cherry Blossoms

I don't generally do updates on Wade Oval but had a few extra minutes today. Monday April 11, 2022.

Some of the trees are already flowering while some are barely starting to bud.

Use your own judgment as when to plan your shoots.

Brookside Reservation Cherry Blossom Bloom 04.10.22

No Change today as expected, it’s been chilly. Warm Temps this week I’m sure will expedite the blooms. Early guess is this weekend will be prime shooting, we’ll see what tomorrow’s warm temperatures bring.

Brookside Reservation 4.08.22

Not much has changed since yesterday with the Cherry Blossom Trees at Brookside Reservation in Cleveland Ohio.

It was pretty chilly out and its expected to remain so for the weekend. Monday brings Temps into the upper 60's, I’m sure that will boost the bloom.

There are these signs that are new for 2022 though so please be respectful of the grounds and trees. Don’t ruin it for everyone else.

Brookside Cherry Blossoms

Brookside Reservation, if you know, you know. Some people hate me for what I do but most love me. 🤷‍♂️

Last year on this day they were in full bloom. It all depends on the weather and this year we’ve been pretty cool and mild so no such luck yet.

Today, April 7th was the 1st day I drove by there, the trees are still in the early stage, the branches are just starting to bud. Too early to tell when we will see flowers.

Sleet Face

Nick Cleveland Portrait

So it's not all about sunshine and rainbows. If you've lived in Northeast Ohio for at least a year you know what I'm talking about. There's no roadmap to the weather and even if they do draw it out it's usually not right. The forecast called for snow starting at 8 o'clock. So I met up with my cousin Nick and John at Pour coffeehouse down on Euclid Ave. around 5:45, Nick has never shot Cityscape in downtown Cleveland and John had the winter blues so I felt like I needed to drag both of them out. As usual just like dinner plans no one has any idea of where they want to go, I’ve been to every inch of downtown so I tell them the cards are in their hands. I end up leading anyway. We head north to an alley that I’ve had in my mind for a few weeks now. As we get down to E 9th. St. the hail starts hitting our face, it stings, the wind whipping down 9th is pretty brutal. We set up our tripods anyway. Looking West through the alley you can see the Key tower, it sets a nice tone for the evening ahead. We each blast off a few shots of each other taking shots and head West towards the popular E. 4th St, but first we stop at the statue in front of the Hyatt and luckily we don’t get kicked out. About 20 minutes and we finally move on.

E. 4th street Cleveland Ohio

I’ve been to 4th so many times I can’t even count so it requires me to get creative with how I shoot it, luckily it’s been raining so I have plenty of puddles to play with. I don’t hesitate to set my camera down in the middle of the street and start firing off some photos. To the right of me I see Nick taking some photos of me so I try to be as still as possible, hopefully he got some bangers. At this point we’ve been out in the rain and hail for two hours, it’s time to grab some food. We settle on the Harry Buffalo and our buddy Jason meet us down there with his seven-year-old who is also photographer, how cool is that! We all smash some wings and fries, head out into the city again. Johns the first one to head home, shortly followed by Nick. Jason myself and his Son head down to Public Square, grab some shots of The Terminal Tower with the Kiss logo on it, not sure why it's on there. Maybe an inductee to The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? We decide to call it a night, but not before Jason takes care of his deposit for the San Francisco workshop (we still have a spot) We part ways, even though it was crappy weather all night I still enjoyed getting out with some good people and creating!

Avery Dennison Campaign

Planning a shoot is never an easy task, especially one of this size, it takes emails and phone calls, permits also need to be pulled. You need to find the proper people to pull the permits from. Get a video guy, coordinate assistants and times and you need to figure out how to get all of the cars there and keep them clean, all before sunrise at 6am. You need to figure out which car picked up the doughnuts, that's pretty important.

This Campaign is for Avery Dennison New Color Launch, The Costal Collection.

You don't plan for the midges to be flocking everywhere by the millions, sticking to your legs and the condensation on the cars as they come in. It's fine, you got this!

So now you have to drive the cars down a single lane walkway with water on either side with only a chainlink fence separating you and Lake Erie. It's still dark out, you want to get the cars staged no later than 30 minutes after sunrise. Why not start shooting at sunrise, you'll find out in a minute. I need height but I need distance. I now have my pickup truck backed all the way up to that chainlink fence, that one I mentioned that is touching the water. I will shoot from the bed of my truck.

Cars are placed as perfect as you're going to get them, the sun is up high enough in the sky where there is no color cast. You need the cars color as true as possible, it is a new color launch after all. Now you have 5 cars that you need to light paint but you need to be careful, the sun is in and out of clouds, sunny, shady, sunny again. You need to watch your shadows and highlights as the sun changes position. Lightpainting from the bed of my truck is risky business but it needs to be done. I am at 14mm and cant go back any further.

We light each car up twice, you can't be too safe, you need to cover your ass, just in case. You can't get your files home and notice you're missing a shot, the campaign is too big, you're a professional after all. We shoot 2 more angles of the 5 car bunch and then we shoot each car individually around the grounds of the Old Coastguard Station.

Don't forget you still need to edit the photos from your 50MP camera. That's a task in itself, don't forget about the last minute deadline change. What's that, you need the hero shot in less than a week? You break the hero shot down in to 6 parts. You edit each car separately for 5 images and then you do your final composition with your base plate, talk about a big file.

There's the little details of getting final images approve by the client, paying your Assistants and Videographer, backing up your files and I'm sure tons of other things I am forgetting about at the time of write up.

Prep starts long before you press that shutter button and go long after.

Toronto

TORONTO WORKSHOP

AUGUST 25-27 2019

Toronto CN Tower

DAY 1

8am- Eight of us head out to Toronto, only six come back, hahaha I’m just kidding, (spoiler alert) we all make it back safe. We leave Cleveland on time, donuts in hand. We ran in to an issue even before we left with transport but quickly figure it out. Big thanks to my dude Johnny C for coming in clutch. The roads were clear the whole way to the border, I mean it is a Sunday morning after all. We are kind of concerned that we will have issues at the border, we have 8 photographers and all of our gear, our ages range from 25 to 80. If you don’t know us we make up an odd bunch. We made it through with flying colors. We make a quick stop at JJ’s on The Dock Eatery about 30 miles outside of the city for lunch, we push on. Food was great, everyone is happy.

4:30pm- We hit up Museum Station on the Transit for some quick photography before we hit dinner and then the Sunset for Epic Skyline views. We got 29 minutes in before the nicest police tell us we can not photograph one of the most shot places in Toronto, it was fine. We moved on.

DSC_3591 (1).jpg

5:30pm- Dinner time! We head right across from the hotel to The Old Spaghetti Factory so we feast like Kings and Queens before heading out for a sunset session of the skyline.

7:30pm- We escape dinner just in time to find parking and get down to Polson Pier, where we will end up for sunset and the first part of blue hour, the best time of day to shoot!

The colors in the sky were just unbelievable that night

The colors in the sky were just unbelievable that night

After we get back to the hotel most of us head back out in to the city and do a little street photography and some cityscapes, A few stay in and get some rest.

CN Tower downtown Toronto

It’s close to midnight, time for lights out. We have a big day tomorrow.

Day 2

6:30am- We head across from our lodging at the Novotel to Eggspectation, it’s highly rated and I’m looking forward to it. It’s Monday morning, we walk in and there’s only one other table seated in the whole place. I don’t think they normally have a big crowd on a Monday, one waitress and one person in the kitchen. We have studio time booked at 9am across town, we should be fine. After 10-15 minutes of no service we make the group call to head elsewhere. We go to the buffet at our hotel. A bit pricey, but amazing, we’re back on track.

8:55am- It’s studio time at Neon Demon Studio, the main part of the 3 day Workshop! It’s finally here, I’ve waited almost a year to shoot here. I started out by previously emailing 10 modeling agencies in Toronto, I am quickly reminding that it is a top tier International city and models are going to come at a premium. Now what do I do, we can’t afford these prices for 2 models at 4 hours each? I’ve got it! I search the studios Instagram page and reach out to 20 models who have been tagged in their photos and photos tagged with the studio and BOOM, we get the 2 perfect models.

9:00am- We find parking and go meet Jon, the studio owner. This place is amazing, we don’t know where to begin. Over 40 neon signs and they all can be configured along with music via an ipad. Our models meet us shortly after we arrive and waste no time in getting busy with the workshop

Click the pictures below to scroll through them

DSC_3793.jpg DSC_4160.jpg DSC_3827.jpg DSC_3830.jpg DSC_3996.jpg DSC_3915.jpg DSC_3879-2.jpg DSC_3867.jpg

1:00pm- We head back to the hotel and break for lunch and a bit of R&R. The 4 guys head across the street for wings and then go do some scouting for evening shots, the girls head to the spa and the 2 that I was worried about petering out before the rest, end up walking the city, hitting the market and church. God bless Bob and his wife Nancy, he’s 82 and out-walking us all.

5:00pm- Time to hit the streets before dinner. We hop on a transit car and ride a few stops towards City Centre. Everyone splits up and puts to use what they’ve been taught so far, we agree to meet back in 90 minutes. I become obsessed with shooting the street cars and busses while trying to do some daytime long exposure.

Toronto Busses Street Photography

6:30pm- We head to Yonge-Dundas Square which is called the Times Square of Toronto to get some Epic blue hour shots before we head to Jack Astors for dinner. Again, we all part ways to put to use what we’ve learned so far. This Square is crazy, it’s so crowded yet challenging to shoot. I love it!

Yonge- Dundas Square Night Long Exposure Toronto

9:30pm- Dinner at Jack Astors, I think we are all relieved to sit down for a minute, rest and gather our thoughts. Food is amazing, yet again. Someone orders the World’s Most Ridiculously Small Brownie, it lives up to its name, but I remember it was tasty. We find the train back towards the hotel and make a few stops snapping shots along the way, it’s getting late and we have an early morning again with some more photography on our last morning in Toronto.

Day 3

7:00am- Sunrise gets rained out, we change up the plans a bit, no big deal.

8:30am- We hit the road and stop at Tim Hortons for some Breakfast on the way to Niagara Falls. Canadian Tim Hortons is 1000% better than the ones in America, I don’t get it. We get to Niagara around 11am, overcast and misty, great conditions for some long exposure, we quickly get to work with our ND filters for some silky water shots.

Niagara Falls

1:00pm- We head home. We head home with full SD cards, great memories, new techniques and most importantly some new friends. I couldn’t have asked for a better group for this workshop. I would do it again in a second!

San Fran Workshop

If you missed out on this workshop check out the next one we have in San Francisco. You don’t want to miss that one!
